Wegovy vs Ozempic: What’s the Difference?

← Back to Journal/Comparisons/GLP-1/3 min read

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same medicine, semaglutide. The difference is what they are approved for, the dose and how insurance covers them.

The short answer

Wegovy and Ozempic are both semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is approved to treat type 2 diabetes and reduce heart risk in people with diabetes, up to 2 mg a week. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management, with a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg a week, and to lower heart risk in people with heart disease and excess weight. Prescribing Ozempic for weight loss alone is off-label.

Why the weight loss differs

Wegovy’s higher dose and its trials in people without diabetes explain most of the gap. People with type 2 diabetes generally lose less weight on the same medicine.

Side effects

The side effects are the same: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and fullness, usually easing with time. Doses are increased slowly to limit them.

Which one will I be prescribed?

It depends on your diagnosis, coverage and supply. If you have type 2 diabetes, Ozempic or another diabetes medicine is usual. For weight management without diabetes, Wegovy (or tirzepatide as Zepbound, where available) is the approved option.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wegovy stronger than Ozempic?

They are the same medicine. Wegovy goes to a higher weekly dose (2.4 mg) than Ozempic (2 mg) and is approved for weight management.

Can I take Ozempic for weight loss?

Doctors sometimes prescribe it off-label, but Wegovy is the semaglutide product approved for weight management.

Do Wegovy and Ozempic have the same side effects?

Yes, mainly nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and fullness.

Why is Wegovy not covered by my insurance?

Many plans cover medicines for diabetes but not for weight management. Coverage varies by plan and province.
